The Stuff of Life

1 Samuel 1:1-2 1 There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. 2  He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. So I foolishly thought I might like to do a study on the book of 1 Chronicles, as I have left it largely untapped. But the first 10 chapters contain mostly a list of names – thus the title of the book – Chronicles. So, maybe we’ll leave that for another day. But I’m longing after some history and even though I’ve done 1 Samuel before in this blog, maybe it is time revisit these ancient stories of Israel’s kings again. The books of 1 & 2 Samuel (which were most likely only one book when first written), and 1 & 2 Kings tell the history of what is known as The United Monarchy . This was the time in Jewish history where God’s people ...

We Made It to the End

Psalm 150 1 Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! 2 Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! 3 Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! 4 Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! 5 Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! 6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! It has taken 171 Fridays spread out over four years to work our way through the entire book of Psalms. (There are 150 chapters, but we took 22 weeks for Psalm 119.) Some of the weeks were difficult as the writers (mostly David) gave honest voice to pain, struggle, and injustice. Some weeks were a little boring as the entire history of the Jewish people was recounted. But God’s Word in the Psalms has been rich indeed. It is fitting that the Psalms should end with words of pure praise. The word “praise” literally m...

It’s No Contest

Galatians 2:20; 6:11-18 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 11 See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. 12 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. 14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. 16 And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 17 From now on let no one cause me trouble, f...

Wanting the Best for Each Other

Galatians 6:1-10 1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5 For each will have to bear his own load. 6 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especiall...
