King Jesus
Psalm 47
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.
1Clap
your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
2For
the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth.
3He
subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet.
4He
chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah
5God
has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
6Sing
praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
7For
God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm!
8God
reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.
9The
princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham. For the
shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted!
What a rousing way to end the week, declaring the praises of
our Savior King. While being subject to a king is not a concept we deal with
daily, it is the way that God has chosen to designate His Son who is seated on
the throne of heaven even now. He takes care of our every need and we offer up
our thanksgiving and praise to our King.
The people of Israel knew what it meant to have a king lead
them. Since the days of Saul, they had a parade of kings; some good (a very
few) and some terrible (the vast majority). They knew what it meant to look to
their king for protection and providence. They also knew the impact of a king
who did not do their job well and caused suffering for the people. But when
they looked toward God, they found a loving and powerful King who always did
what was best for them. Even as independent, self-reliant (to a fault) people,
we can appreciate the benefits of having Jesus as our King.
Our King has subjects. The question of the day; are we subjected to Him? If Jesus is my King
then I simply must surrender my stubborn heart over to Him, bowing to His ways
and will. That, for me, is a daily exercise, often worked out on the pages of
this blog each morning! And sometimes it goes beyond daily into an hourly
obedience as the flesh rises up and declares its independence from the King.
But the Lord has called me into His Kingdom and as His
subject I am always welcomed to return to the throne room to fall at His feet,
declaring yet again, God is the King of
all the earth.
