Rushing Waters
Psalm 93
1The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; He has put
on strength as His belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be
moved.
2Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.
3The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their
voice; the floods lift up their roaring.
4Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of
the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!
5Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits Your house, O Lord,
forevermore.
These
five verses are filled with imagery that causes the spirit to soar. When we
take the time to know God, we are drawn over and over into His presence for the
purpose of praising His name. The fact that we are even welcomed to see that
majesty is amazingly accomplished by the blood of Jesus, inspiring yet another reason
so praise Him.
Of
the most interest to me this morning is the use of flood imagery to illustrate
the power of God and the sound of His voice. There are numerous verses in the
Bible that attest to the sound of God’s voice as being like that of a roaring
flood.
Jeremiah 10:13
When he utters
his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the
heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes
lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.
Ezekiel 43:2
And behold, the glory of the
God of Israel was coming from the east. And the sound of his coming was like the sound of many waters, and the
earth shone with his glory.
Revelation 1:14–15
14The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes
were like a flame of fire, 15his
feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.
Because
of television, we've all seen video of the power of flood waters or perhaps even
been a flood personally. Who can forget watching entire home wash down a raging
river or seen pictures of an area devastated by the power of moving water. As I
pondered the power of a flood there are 4 characteristics that seem pertinent
as we follow the imagery from roaring waters to God.
- A Flood is Sudden – God rarely (how about never) asks permission to move through creation or through our lives.
- A Flood is Unstoppable – Try and stop God from doing His will. You can’t.
- A Flood is All-Powerful – There is nothing outside of God’s power and might and He uses that power for our good.
- A Flood is Life Altering – When God impacts a life, it is forever changed. Forever.
So
if you hear the sound of rushing waters today, listen closely. God may be
speaking to you!
