Whatever is on Your Mind
Philippians 4:8–9
8Finally, brothers, whatever is
true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is
anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9What you have learned and
received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace
will be with you.
When you line these mind sets all up they compile quite a
list! But we cannot simply rush over this verse because of the human downfalls
of deceit, injustice, filth, hatred, wretchedness, worthlessness, and dark secrets.
When you line up the antonyms to the “whatever words” the list is truly
despicable.
There’s not much here that is startling or new. Your
mind controls the tone of your day, your week, your life. If you are dwelling on
the mud then mud you shall reap. If you instead are following the Spirit of
Christ then you shall reap the gifts and fruit of the Spirit. This isn’t rocket
science, it’s just common sense.
But where is the Gospel here? The Gospel lies in the fact
that Jesus is all of the “whatever characteristics.” He grants the motivation
and the power to center your mind on Him and His character. This verse is a
stand-alone reminder to every Christian that what you put into your mind and
what you dwell upon is important. If you choose not to stay Christ-focused,
other forces will find you easy prey. Paul doesn't want to see that happen to his brothers and sisters in Christ. He loves them too much to neglect this reminder.
