Powerful Combination

Matthew 19:13-15
13Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people,
14but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”
15And he laid his hands on them and went away.

The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are the weakest and the most vulnerable. The Kingdom of Heaven is best represented by those who are simple and unassuming. It doesn’t get any plainer than that! And yet we strive for the opposite. It is counter-intuitive to serve the weak rather than cater to the powerful. The powerful can give us more! Certainly they should receive more of our attention! Right?

Jesus sets us straight. The weak and vulnerable always deserve our attention and our care. It isn’t someone else's job, it’s ours. Even as I type this I am listening to 4 children (my grandchildren) under 7 screaming around my basement. They are noisy, chaotic, and sometimes leak stuff I don’t want to deal with. They cry easily and get confused often. They don’t always understand what is happening around them and are quick to look to an adult for comfort and help. And they are also quick to hug and smile, sing a song, and delight in some attention. All four of them will tell you that Jesus loves you and feel no fear in sharing that truth. They are weak and they are mighty. It is a powerful combination!
